Well this year has already been filled with newness. We have a new French teacher and a new Spanish teacher. They are radiating with questions as they learn the ins and outs of our school and what it means to be a teacher in PG County. Aside from my new teachers, I have inherited about 60 new students whom I have never met, making my total number of students nearly 150! Each one bring a different personality, different learning style, as well as sense of humor. I enjoy walking into my classroom each day to teach them something new. In turn they teach me things as well. Since I am learning Spanish outside of the classroom, many students speak to me in Spanish as well. We challenge each other to learn languages, as well as about the cultures that are engrafted in the languages. I welcome questions in my classroom, because that is how we learn. As the first quarter nears its end (tomorrow!), I wonder how many students will continue to use Memrise to help their studies outside of class...I love using technology whenever possible to help teach French...

Well, what can I say…It's been one month and we are well on our way. In my French class I have students who can boldly ask me how am I doing and saying "Bonjour" as they walk into my classroom, and down the hallway to their other classes. They have even learned how to say the famous question, "What are those?". They are asking me question, "Mme Lewis, how do you say…". At the moment the most asked question is "How do you say,'may I go to the bathroom?', in French". They have learned to apologize, count to 69, give basic greetings, help me describe the weather, give the date, and are currently learning about things found in the classroom. They try to decipher what I say in the classroom, as we gravitate to a 90/10 split classroom. They are so excited when they are "on point" (as my students express). My students in French 1 are awesome….
When it comes to my French 2 students…they are a lively bunch who are so willing to learn and helpful to others in the classroom. We are covering things they learned last year so that we can really get into the heart of the language and its culture. We are learning the past tense and the present perfect (also known as passé composé et imparfait). I ask questions, they ask questions. It is truly a teacher-student led learning center. It is always enjoyable to see their expressions when I reply a lengthy sentence to them in French, and they are able to decipher what I am saying….responses like"Oh man! I got it, I know what she said" or "I got this!" with such confidence it awesome!!! We are a work of art in progress... |
